Tale of Two Maxies

Almost a year ago, we received news that Jen Lilley would be filling in for Kirsten Storms as Maxie. Although I am not a big fan of the character of Maxie, it was difficult for me to conceive of anyone else in this role. The rambling, self-centered, often ditzy fashion plate was a difficult character to emulate, and sure enough the replacement Maxie seemed awkward, like a little girl walking in her mother’s shoes. You could tell that Ms. Lilley had watched many "Maxie scenes" and was doing her best to copy Ms. Storms' movements, facial expressions, and even her tone. But I could live through it, since it was only for a short while, or so we thought.

Weeks later, we received more news that Kirsten Storms' return was unknown. This news should have made me upset, but the truth is I wasn’t. Now it is not to say that anyone could replace Kirsten Storms as Maxie, but by now it was clear that Jen Lilley was giving us a different version of Maxie. It wasn't a complete switch and you could clearly see that Jen Lilley was keeping true to the character’s spirit. This was evident during her scenes in October 2011 where they paid tribute to BJ (BJ’s birthday). Jen Lilley had her work cut out for her and work she did.

For me, Jen Lilley put her stamp on Maxie when she played opposite the great Bruce Weitz. The Maxie and Anthony Z. scenes were just golden. From the time she pulled him from the waters at the docks (where she offered to call him a cab), I couldn’t stop chuckling. When Anthony called her "Cookie" the name just stuck, and Jen Lilley became my "Cookie Maxie." I looked forward to watching Maxie and Anthony, and when he summoned her to plan his wedding I was grateful to see more of them together. The comedic timing between these two takes one thing…….talent!

Jen Lilley also did a great job in her scenes opposite Rebecca Herbst. Elizabeth and Maxie are far from friends, and it is not easy to convey that type of dislike in a two-minute scene. With Matt caught in the middle (although I do believe he liked it), Maxie and Elizabeth’s strained relationship was once again in the forefront. In the end Matt had made his choice and the scenes where Maxie had to tell Matt that he killed Lisa, coupled with the fact that Jason Cook had decided to leave GH just as the writing was getting good for the character, made it even more poignant.

During the emotional times of Robin’s death and the subsequent storylines that followed, Jen Lilley did a great job. For some GH fans, Robin’s death was painful to watch and the loss of her character left us saddened. For me, having Jen Lilley around to portray Maxie was just what I needed.

Jen Lilley went from looking like a child walking in her mother’s shoes to finding her own shoe size and leaving her own path. And even though I am still no fan of Maxie (the character), Jen Lilley made the scenes between Maxie and Spinelli, Sam, Lulu, Patrick, Mac, Felicia and many others believable.

As news that Kirsten Storms was headed back to work surfaced, there was little left to say except……

"Welcome back, Kirsten" and "Thank you so much, Jen! We will miss you, Cookie."
