Our Opinion!

Article by Thane 3/1/19

Will, Sonny and Leo

I watch Days Of Our Lives, for some reason. It has characters who are gay. I am not complaining about them, but I am complaining about the fans of the show making silly comments.  I am not talking about homophobic comments. Luckily, I don't encounter many of them.

I am talking about the absurd double standards. Some people thought that Will's (non) death was gay bashing. I find this ridiculous as people die all the time on soaps.  It is true that it was a particularly violent death, but other people said that soaps were going through a violent time in that era. Would people say it was straight bashing if it happened to a straight person? Maybe I sound
like a "Why don't we have straight pride parades" type of person, but I find the double standard amusing.

Then there's Leo. A person said that he's a terrible example of a gay person. Why do gay people have to be examples? It's a soap -- not a public service announcement. I don't like the way he kisses people without consent. I am not writing the show, though; I would probably do a much better job, so NBC, call me!

Claire also kissed Tripp without consent, and that felt ridiculous.  Leo is a jerk, but some homosexuals are jerks. That's life. He's a gay soap bitch. There are aspects of his character that are deeply problematic. For example, his frequent assaults of people. I would write him without those aspects. I expect he'll have a sudden redemption, eventually.

In conclusion, before you criticize gay characters and story lines, ask yourself if you would make the same criticisms if the characters weren't gay.
